The face is one of the most prominent parts of the body and is the first area to visibly show the effects of aging or environmental stresses. Therefore, taking care of facial skin is of utmost importance. Maintaining the health of facial skin affects its appearance and radiance, helping you have youthful and vibrant skin. Our skin’s surface is covered with dead skin cells that naturally shed every month and are replaced by new cells. Since dead cells accumulate on the skin’s surface, they diminish its brightness and radiance. This is where skincare and the removal of these dead cells from the skin’s surface become crucial. There are many home remedies for skin care, such as face cleansing with lotions, using moisturizing creams, or vitamin masks. Still, sometimes it’s better to have this done systematically and by a skincare professional. Facial skin care, regardless of whether your skin is oily, dry, or prone to acne, can provide you with its benefits.
What is Facial Skin Care?
Facial skin care is a multifaceted skin treatment that includes steaming, face masks, exfoliation, cleansing, facial massage, and various creams and lotions. In simpler terms, it’s a treatment performed with the aim of improving the appearance and providing more comfort to the skin and face. It’s a treatment that doesn’t require the use of specific products, and when done correctly and tailored to your skin type, it comes with numerous benefits. For example, it should be noted that exfoliation should not be done for sensitive skin.
Facial skin care is one of the newer methods used for skin rejuvenation, and since it’s entirely non-invasive, many individuals prefer this method over more invasive ones. Some of the other uses of facial skin care include:
- Increasing collagen production
- Removing dead skin cells
- Enhancing the appearance of fine lines and blemishes on the face
- Cleansing pores
- Moisturizing and hydrating the skin.
Benefits of Facial Skin Care:
- Deep Cleansing: Facial skin care offers a much better and deeper cleansing compared to at-home methods. It helps remove any accumulated oil, toxins, impurities, and bacteria that contribute to skin issues. Proper exfoliation, like microdermabrasion, removes dead skin cells, clears pores, and enhances the absorption of other products. This process also promotes a radiant, softer, and more youthful-looking skin.
- Anti-Aging: Facial treatments help slow down the aging process and prevent the development of fine lines and wrinkles on the skin. Facial massages with anti-aging creams improve blood circulation, oxygenation, collagen production, and enhance skin elasticity, resulting in reduced lines and wrinkles.
- Skin Rejuvenation: Exfoliation, massage, steaming, and masking during facial treatments aid in skin rejuvenation. In other words, it helps maintain vibrant, youthful, and healthy-looking skin. Immediate results may not be apparent, but the skin repairs and rejuvenates over time, which you will notice. It’s recommended to have ongoing treatment.
- Improvement of Skin Care Routine: By assessing your skin, a professional can determine which facial treatment is most suitable for you and recommend the right products for your skin. This is of great importance as it can help prevent skin issues and maintain your skin in good condition.
- Treatment of Skin Issues: After diagnosing skin problems and diseases, facial skin care can assist in their treatment and improvement. Issues such as blackheads, whiteheads, sun damage, and acne scars can be minimized or completely treated through facial treatments
The Stages of Facial Skin Care:
Each facial skin care session begins with a consultation, during which the doctor determines which products and treatments are most suitable for your skin. In fact, as mentioned earlier, facial skin care is a multi-purpose treatment that encompasses several skincare methods in one session. Let’s examine the stages of this skincare treatment:
- Skin Cleansing: The process starts by massaging the face and neck areas to remove any makeup, dirt, and impurities from the skin. Afterward, a cleanser is used along with warm water, and a facial sponge or cotton pad to clean the face. The face is thoroughly dried, and the skin is examined. This stage helps determine which type of mask is suitable for your skin.
- Steaming: Steaming is performed to provide deeper cleansing and to moisturize and loosen the skin for subsequent steps. In some cases, when the skin is very sensitive, facial steaming might not be used.
- Exfoliation: In this step, dead skin cells are removed from the skin using an exfoliating cream, scrub, or a steamer, depending on your skin type. Exfoliants contain enzymes and chemicals that loosen the bonds between skin cells, ensuring better exfoliation.
- Extraction: This stage is intended to unclog pores blocked by excess oil or dead skin cells, which can cause blackheads and acne. Extraction can be done manually or with the use of specialized tools. If not done correctly, it can result in redness or bruising on the patient’s face. People with more sensitive skin might experience slight discomfort.
- Facial Massage: Facial treatments primarily include massaging the face and often other upper body areas to improve lymphatic drainage and detoxify the body.
- Mask and Additional Steps: In this stage, an appropriate mask for your skin or a hydrating agent is applied to eliminate dryness.
These stages together make up a comprehensive facial skin care treatment, which offers a range of benefits for your skin’s health and appearance.
Post-Facial Skincare:
If the skincare products you have used in the past have been rough or have not adequately cleared your pores, it is possible that following a facial, you may experience issues such as acne and irritation. It is recommended to follow the provided instructions and gently cleanse your face using a non-comedogenic foam or cream to minimize redness and post-treatment blemishes.
It is best to avoid using an exfoliating scrub for a few days after the treatment. Your skin is highly sensitive post-facial, and you should refrain from using any cleansers or abrasive scrubs for 48 to 72 hours.
Due to the sensitivity of your skin after the treatment, be gentle when washing your face.
Try to avoid direct sunlight exposure for several days following the treatment and make sure to use sunscreen with an appropriate SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
Avoid massaging your skin after a facial treatment.
